Full Reviews
- Comfort. These boots required zero break in time. I bought them on a monday and did an 8 mile ruck that friday. no blisters.
- Weight. These are almost as light as the pair of Garmont NFS I went through this past winter.
- Support. This is where this boot really shined for me. in spite of being a sneaker boot, competitive with the NFS et al. in terms of weight and cushioning, they felt much more supportive and stable underfoot than the NFS did, almost like a real field boot would.
The bad:
- Durability. Within 2 weeks of light field duty the hardware had ripped out of one of the the drain ports on the right boot, and a week later I was missing a drain port on the left as well. after a month of hard(ish) use, I'm starting to wear small holes in the nylon against my ankle bones.
- Color: kind of nitpicky, but the tan is a little light to be really coyote. sure, they're technically 670-1 compliant, but looking at them they're really sort of halfway between sand and coyote.
- No wide sizes. These run a bit wide to begin with, and fit my wide feet acceptably in spite of only coming in standard widths, but I would have liked a wide option for a little more room in the toe box. Conversely, I also feel like the standard last on these is wide enough that they may not work at all for people with narrow feet.
Bottom line: Merrell came so close to a truly great lightweight boot, but durability problems mean I don't expect to buy a second pair until they make some updates. I would gladly have taken an extra couple ounces per foot for a bit more durability.
