TRU-SPEC Trek Sling Pack Tactical Reviews, Deals, Problems and Guides

It's possible that someone will read this and get the impression that I don't care for the pack. That's wrong. Regardless, please read on.

I wanted a fairly small pack to carry the stuff I always seem to leave in the car or at the cabin when taking a brief stroll or following grandkids around their many and varied 'events'. Score 5 stars.

I decided it should be a sling pack for the usual reasons, and, 'cuz I'm a lefty and the wife may want to use it, I wanted it to be quickly and easily ambidextrous. Score 5 stars.

I wanted to be able to attach 'stuff' easily in order to carry odd stuff like water bottles, a coat, etc. Score 4 stars (wish it had some built-in straps for roll-up items and netting for bottles and trash). Sure, I could MOLLE something up, but then there's less free MOLLE loop space and it's a smallish bag. Eh.

Pleasant surprises 5 stars: The glasses pouch which is big enough to hold my outsized NRA shooting glasses. CCW pouchES (plural), totally unexpected. There's a perfect spot for a tablet that has a limited cell capability to DL maps.

Sadness (no score is appropriate): Turned out that I actually need something bigger. So, now I have two EDC type sling packs. I attribute this to my "Be Prepared" training, which sometimes(?) goes a little overboard.

Does that mean this one will be retired? Absolutely NOT! I'm duplicating everything that goes in it for the new pack, and this one goes in the wife's car (which we usually take when going anywhere together). That way, she also has an EDC pack (remember, ambidextrous). Albeit, it will have a few items she probably won't ever have to use. Plus, the stuff I usually forget to transfer to her car already will be pre-loaded. Yay! But I predict that ultimately it will become HER pack (currently, her purse is almost as big as she is).

PS Just got back from some grandkids' track meet and noticed that this pack and others about the same size and style were everywhere (coaches and spectators)!
PPS The new 'larger' pack also has a nice sunglasses compartment, BUT it's just a shade too small to hold the NRA shooters (dang!). Not quite as easy to swing as this one, but holds more 'stuff'.

Okay, first off, I did a lot of shopping around before I finally jumped in for the purchase. I first got a similar item from Red Rock Outdoor Gear and was pleased with it but the color was not Coyote Tan like I wanted, so I decided to go with the Tru-Spec Trek Sling Pack. The color in the ad was exactly what I wanted. When it arrived , the color was wrong again, but it was even further off color than the first bag. I checked the ad photo again and it looked coyote tan to me. But the actual item was more like a light foliage green or olive drab for the main fabric color with coyote tan trim. I was very pleased with the item itself, in that it was well constructed, well stitched, and compartment layout was excellent. The main attraction for me was the rear concealment compartment for my EDC firearm, which is not readily noticeable if one is asked to open the front compartment, as they do at the movie theater now and then. I don't like letting everyone see the firearm unless I really have to and only show my badge if I have to. At any rate, I sent the item back and ordered the same sling bag in their light gray color. I am anxiously awaiting this bag so I can deploy it for EDC use immediately. The bag itself is great, if you don't mind the light green color instead of real coyote tan..

The pack is designed very usefully. Plenty of compartments and zippered pockets insides. Webbing is nice and velcro pads insides the compartments would be very effective for any one use them for field.
There is one negative side for me. The sling is bit too wide/big for me. My purpose of taking sling pack is for smaller and lighter load of goods I need to carry for the day like when going to a park or beach and would like low profile than full back pack. When sling this pack and stand in front of a mirror, it does not look light aesthetically.

This bag is perfect, I wear it everyday and have had no complaints except one, I am about 5 foot 7 and weigh about 150, I have the sling in the shortest it could possibly go, the bag feels fine and sits on my back ok its just you can tell its meant for someone a little bit taller and more built then I am. however I have learned with the waist strap that it is the perfect fit and with a jacket or hoodie on its fine. Also its great for Motorcycles

Pack is pretty good quality nothing like maxpedition or 5.11 but it's up there. I was looking for a "man purse",something to carry all the time into work and into any other location without worrying about leaving it in the car. It's been a week and it's still holding up.

Just replaced all the zipper pulleys with 550 paracord, making it even better.

Clips are 6 out of 10 they feel cheap but haven't had them fail just yet.

I bought two of these sling packs, one in tan and one in gray. My wife and I wanted them for EDC. They are very well constructed and the pockets inside and out are just right for common things you would carry on a daily basis. We carry everyday and they would be perfect for that except for one thing. If you need to retrieve your firearm quickly it would be difficult to get to if you still have it on. The pocket on the outside just under the shoulder strap is almost impossible to get into because the strap stops you from retrieving your firearm. I figured out quickly to put mine in the front zippered pocket and only have to pull one zipper down for instant access. That's why I only rated them 4stars instead of 5. A compact model fits fine there but a full sized pistol won't. It will do the job if you carry a single stack, but a double stack pistol would have to be put inside the main compartment and you'd need time to access it.

After a long search I think this is the perfect solution for many reasons.
Very clever and discrete concealed weapon compartments. It is extremely well made with quality zippers and stitching. Haven't used it yet, but I am excited to be outfitting it for my daily "go everywhere" bag !
In agreance with another review, the "coyote tan" color is more green than tan.
For the value in design, quality, and price I think it's hard to beat !

I absolutely love this bag it's my second one .Bought my first in the tan and now one in black . It's the perfect bag for ccw it has an almost hidden pocket that fits my nano or glock 27 and no one would even know it's there!!! also has many small pockets and areas with velcro for holsters it's truly an awesome bag. I wish they would make an identical bag with all the same pockets only taller maybe 17" tall I'd buy several of them!!! Thanks

This pack is well made and has the usual features...and the added velcro closure carry pocket below the top front pocket.

The strap is comfortable and pockets are laid out well for easy access.

My sole complaint (not really complaining!) is that the velcro closure carry pocket isn't deep enough to carry a mid-size pistol. My G19 will fit in the pocket but it doesn't leave enough room to actually close it via the velcro.

When I first received this bag as a gift, I thought it was stupid. I had no idea what I'd use it for. A week ago, however, I took it on a 7 day trip to the Middle East just to see what it could do. In short, it impressed me. The number of pockets was amazingly helpful and the size is great for getting around as a tourist. Not as bulky as a full size backpack, but big enough to hold extra layers. After the inevitable trial and error, I ended up using one pocket for my sunglasses, one for my camera, one for a flashlight, yet another for binos, and the main compartment for my extra layers. The bag also has several hidden pockets. I used one of these for my passport and one on the outside for maps. I was blown away by the utility of the bag. I even slapped some surf shoes into the bag's main compartment one day. Highly useful!
