Maybe you’ve also experienced the fun of transitioning from a large pack to a smaller pack when you didn’t have the time - trying to decide what comes with and what stays behind. Usually, when in a rushed situation, you don’t have time to properly pack and, therefore, have a lot of wasted space as well as a very disorganized pack. Condor Outdoor’s Orion Assault Pack attempts to solve these problems by having more durability, comfortability, and a high amount of organization including a detachable assault pack.
This pack has taken everything I’ve thrown at it thus far and can defiantly take much more. I have noticed a minor amount of wear on one side in a one-inch square area, but the rest of the pack seems to be holding up just fine. In fact, it still looks brand-new. Having a 40-liter capacity makes this a must for the pack needs to be able to support the weight of such a load,
For comfortability, The main pack has five pads on the back which are covered by a jersey material to provide breathability. The straps are very wide and padded to distribute the weight and are very effective at doing so. They also have a sternum strap to keep the whole pack in place while moving. To distribute even more weight, the main pack uses a waste belt which is very wide and decently padded which makes it sit on my hips snugly. To support the pack there is a plastic frame on the interior of the backing between the pads and the bladder pouch. I was, however, a bit disappointed when I saw the straps on the smaller pack. While they do provide great padding and my shoulders don’t hurt when I wear the pack, there is no waste strap or sternum strap. This is rather disappointing because I use the smaller pack almost as much as the larger one. Furthermore, the padding on the smaller pack was a little disappointing as well. There are several sections of built-in foam separated by a little bit of stitching providing some discomfort.
The organization in this pack set is extremely well thought out. There are three carry handles on the main pack – one on the top, and one on either side. The pack also comes with two detachable zipper pouches that MOLLE onto either side each large enough to store three 16 oz water bottles, or six 5.56x45mm 30rd STANG magazines with room left over in both cases. Continuing to the back side, the pack has a stuff-it or helmet-carry pouch to fit odd shaped objects. Moving to the main compartment, there is ample storage room with a 40-liter capacity along with two mesh organizer pouches. Along with this, there are many different straps inside ranging in layout. The hydration pouch is on the other side of a well-padded foam liner inside the divider to the main compartment making it difficult to puncture the bladder. The secondary pack is essentially the admin pouch of the main assault pack carrying small notebooks, documents, pens/pencils, and smaller gear. The outer compartment has a single zipper on the right side for the outer pouch. The main pouch has two zipper tabs on the top opening half the length. Within the main compartment rests the admin sleeves having three sleeves for notebooks or smaller sized books. Below these are two slots on either side great for phones or radios. Between these are three perfectly sized pen/pencil sleeves. Below the admin sleeves is a blank canvas as far as how you want to keep your gear. I’ve found that this 10-liter pack is highly customizable and ideal as an everyday carry pack or a 24-hour assault pack.
All things considered, the Condor Outdoor Orion Assault Pack serves my needs very well. The durability is excellent and will take a very good amount of wear before it starts to show. The comfortability is excellent with padding the keep the pack stable while in motion. The organization is amazing due to the amount of customization available. I give this pack 5/5 because the pros greatly out weigh the cons.
