I have one of the original Lansky systems from the early 70s. I've had to replace the stones several times which should tell you how much I use it. Unfortunately, the new vice design is not nearly as good as the original one which is why I only give it 3 stars, now. The newer design does not grip blades as well as the old design. Also, it is made from a softer aluminum so it distorts and slips more easily. I exchanged the new Lansky vice several times and all were inferior to the original one. If they had kept the old design I would have easily given it 5 stars. They did not, so 3 stars. Regardless, you will be challenged to find a better system without spending magnitudes more money. If you can find one of the older vices up for sale anywhere, GRAB IT! If not, then this will do well since the entire kit takes up very little room so it can fit into almost any travel gear. I took mine to Iraq and everyone was asking me to sharpen their blades for them. I guess that's one way to be the hit of the party. LOL

In short, I once great product is now a good product and is still better than anything else in the same price bracket. Even with its lesser quality that before, you won't be sorry for buying the Lansky system.

If you don't know how to properly use manual knife sharpening equipment or honing stones, this kit's for you! Easy to understand instructions on how to sharpen your knives, using each grade of stone. This stone kit will re-form your knife edges back to factory original angles, given your choice of angle setting, on the handle/guide rod unit. Also, your knives will be very sharp afterwards, so watch your fingers! The only downside to this sharpening system is that it is hand-held. Lansky makes a pedestal stand and a swivel pedestal stand for the handle unit. After using this honing system a couple of times; I can see the merit in purchasing this option. All said: this is a professional knife sharpening system, using top quality stones and better yet, your own two hands and a little time spent showing some love to and for your steel.

Works great. Once you get the hang of how it works, can really get a clean edge on your knife.
