Named after the brave men risking their lives to protect our country, the Bates 8" Tropical Seals Durashocks boot is designed to stand up to the toughest treatment and not wear down after years of use. This functional tactical boot features a durable, full-grain leather and ballistic nylon upper that provides maximum protection from the elements, but still maintains breathability and comfort. The slip-resistant, rubber DuraShocks outsole is built on a shock-absorbing, cushioned midsole that protects wearers from falls and hazardous surfaces. It is engineered to provide superior grip on any terrain and will not lose traction in wet conditions. Rugged, direct attach construction ensures that the boot will not fall apart after constant use and promotes a comfortable, secure fit. With a removable, cushioned insert for added comfort and a traditional military lacing system, this boot is perfect for anyone seeking long-lasting and versatile tactical functionality in a lightweight, ultra-durable frame.

I've been wearing Bates 8" Tropical's nearly every single day since 1998! I've had exactly six pairs-and need a new pair now, which is why I'm here shopping and writing this review. And yeah, I do wear them completely out–which takes me 2-3 years depending on activity. I've had both steel-toed versions, and non-reinforced (back when they still made them) and I can't say enough good about these simple, lo-tech, rugged boots. Ultra-confortable, cool on the feet (hence "Tropical" designation), wear like iron, light as sneakers, extremely flexible non-binding uppers, great shock absorption, good traction (when lugs still appear on soles–hehe!) The only con is that they've more than doubled in price in the last 14 years. But at $120-ish now I recon they're a good enough investment. I'm still buying and wearing them out. I'd go into combat in these any day. If they're good enough for SEALS to train in, they're good enough for me. (And probably you too.)

While these boots are the most comfortable I've worn, the soles are really poor. I wear them in a Legion color guard in parades, and after only one parade the soles cracked and later the heels disintegrated completely. These boots were a couple years old and seldom worn, but sat in a dark closet when not being worn. Bates said they were too old to warranty, so I can't recommend them. Stay away from the durashock soles, not repairable or replaceable.

The quality of the boot is Exceptional. The boots are very basic looking nothing to fancy. The 2 vent ports allow air in making them perfect for hot weather. The soles are thick and look like there going to last a while, and they are really light. The sizing is a little of. I ussaully order a 10 in shoes but 10 was a little to loose so I got a 9.5 which fit perfect. As with most leather boots these are going to take a while to get worn in. The heals caused me some trouble so I suggest applying leather softener and prepping them before taking them out for a long day. Great boot and there made in the USA.

Was on active duty for over 4 years and this was the best boot for me. It meet all my needs and more, but the last pair I bought on my own was of a much lower quality sole than before. The sole completely disintegrated and literally crumbled apart after only a year. The old ones never did this. Guess they don't make the sole the same anymore.

I wore the steel toe version in the AF.They were comfortable right out of the box. These however,I've worn for a week.Another few days, and I should be crippled. These are awful! There's no room in the toe box.Marked"EW" but they're not.Compared to the "issue"boots, the soles are a joke! If they were priced at $50,they might be a bargain.

I first purchased these boots because I was told they were as comfortable as running shoes. In my opinion they are not as comfortable as running shoes but they are as close as I've found in a boot. I have run in these boots. I have run bleacher steps in these boots. I have even jumped rope in them. Mostly I use them as work boot. Very comfortable but not a running shoe. This is my 4th pair. I don't forsee changing styles. In my opinion this is the best boot for my money.

These are the most confy boots I have ever worn. They are great. Easy to get on and off, Don't know you have them on while you do. They are easy to run in, climb in, work all day in and when you come home your feet feel like you have been home all day. They are a must of men and women who are on their feet a lot thru the day. I can tell you in my opinion you won't regret the cost, and they are made in the U.S.

I got these boots for Christmas of 2011, and they've yet to concern me in any way. They're excellent in all aspects of use; lightweight, comfortable, durable (USA Made), reliable, well fitted, nice, easy to shine, tough inner/outer soles, water-resistant (not 'proof, remember) - and never mind the price, I think they're worth more than $120.
I enjoy my daily wearing of the boots.
